Building bridges

Freies Ensemble Jedermensch is a renowned theater ensemble based in Leipzig, known for its contemporary productions in performance art. The ensemble regularly showcases its work in local venues, engaging audiences with innovative interpretations of classic and modern plays. Their productions, like Hamletmaschine by Heiner Müller, are deeply rooted in artistic exploration, often reflecting on social and philosophical themes through powerful, emotionally charged performances.

For Hamletmaschine, the production team was working under tight deadlines to prepare for the premiere, needing high-quality imagery to promote the play across various platforms. The production’s imagery would be essential for attracting press attention and engaging potential audiences, making the right visuals critical to its success.

Preparation is key

To deliver the most accurate and compelling imagery, I took several preparatory steps. First, I joined a full rehearsal before the official dress rehearsal, immersing myself in the play to understand its tone, pacing, and key moments. By attending this full rehearsal, I was able to observe the director, Jula Marie Kühl’s vision, and gain insight into the actors’ performances.

The team needed photographs that conveyed the emotional intensity and raw expression of the performance.

Two days later, I returned for the final dress rehearsal, equipped with my gear and ready to photograph. In collaboration with the director and the production team, I discussed which moments were particularly important and which areas of the stage were accessible without disrupting the flow of the rehearsal. I communicated directly with the actors to ensure they were comfortable with my movements, stepping on stage when necessary to capture the best angles without interrupting their performance.

Capturing emotion and atmosphere

The result was a collection of 25 striking, high-quality images that authentically documented the production while also drawing in potential audiences with their powerful visual appeal.

Each image captured the raw emotion, energy, and atmosphere of Hamletmaschine, from moments of intense action to quieter, more contemplative scenes. The final set provided the production team with a range of options, from dramatic close-ups to wide shots that showcased the full scope of the play.
